Next up hype: New Balance x Aime Leon Dore 550

In this edition of CrepTalk we talk about the potential hype behind New Balance’s gem and its collaboration with New York based brand Aime Leon Dior.

When we think of retro basketball sneakers, we often think of the big four brands, Adidas, Nike, Converse, and Puma. However, we do not tend to remember the underrated and under the radar brand, New Balance.

In 1989, the basketball world was entering another golden age, with rising Bull Michael Jordan taking Nike to new heights, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson still holding down converse, it would be difficult for just about any other brand to enter the market, unfortunately for New Balance this was the case. As New Balance released the ‘low top’ 550 sneaker which was met with little success.

Fast Forward 31 years, New Balance teams up with New York based fashion brand Aime Leon Dore and re-releases the shoe through its ‘International Friendship Through Basketball’ campaign, whereby the 550 was released in four different colourways, white/green, white/black, white grey, and white/red.

Upon its initial release the shoe was met with great success, as the hype was real, as of right now the coveted shoe goes for £400 plus on StockX.

In my opinion the collaboration is unique, as it takes the New Balance 550 and gives it an aged vintage look, almost making it look like it came straight outta 1989.

Plus, I think New Balance is making a smart move in re-releasing such shoes especially when vintage shoes like dunks and Jordan 1s are at a high hype right now, and it fits in well with the vintage trend going on.

The New Balance x Aime Leon Dore 550 is about to release a new set of colourways, including black, yellow, and burgundy, the highly coveted silhouette is set to release sometime this month stay tuned for further updates regarding this low-key gem.
